Reading Notes: Mahabharata Part B

 Character Focus

The character I decided to focus on for the Part B reading is Draupadi. I found her story interesting because of the different men competing in the swayamvara reminded me of Sita's suitors trying to compete to lift the bow.

She is the fire-born daughter of King Drupada. Arjuna wins the competition, the five Pandavas would become her husbands. She would spend a year with each of them.

She had a son with each of them known as the Upapandavas. Arjuna had to self-impose exile after he walked in on her and Yudhisthira. A dog stole Yudhsithira's shoes (an indication of privacy) causing Arjuna to accidentally walk in. Draupadi cursed all dogs after.

Yudhishthira staked his wife during a gambling match and lost to Duryodhana. He demanded her become his slave and tried to disrobe her. She had God's protection when multiple cloth layers on her sari appeared, and Duryodhana unable to take it off.

King Dhritarashtra grants her a boon and she frees Yudhishthira and his brothers.
